There is a new, and I dare say most comprehensive, book on poultry health. Parasites, Diseases,
and Disorders of Poultry: Recognizing and Treating has come up on my threads time and time
again. Everything I’ve seen about it has been positive, with comments such as:

So I figured “you know what, I’ll give it a try.” And boy was I NOT disappointed! The pictures
alone make this a great buy. The authors (Jeff Duguay, well known poultry author and
breeder/exhibitor and Howard Davenport, years of practical poultry health experience) have put
together a poultry book that is SO MUCH MORE than just a poultry health book. They begin by
covering the basics. I’m talking anatomy, the respiratory system, how to do a physical
examination, feeding and essential amino acids, and so on. They next go into parasites, internal
an external, with great quality pictures, descriptions of the little buggers, and treatments;
complete with tables and dosages along with withdrawal periods.
Your birds ever have a respiratory problem? This book is where you will learn all about modes
of transmission, what a bird with that disease looks like, and of course how to treat it. Of course
reproductive issues, digestive problems, wing, leg, foot issues, viruses, fungal; you name it, it’s
in there! I really appreciate their section on “Strange behaviors and odd looking things.” In this
section you will find answers to those questions that SO many new poultry owners have. Such
as, “There’s a pimple-like structure on my chicken’s back.” That “pimple-like structure” is the
preen gland. The authors give a great explanation of what it is, what it is used for, and there is no
shortage of pictures! This is only a smattering of what you will find in this most excellent poultry
health book.
